Abby’s experiences as a volunteer with the Sister Joyce Dura, O.S.F., Supper Program have transformed her outlook on people who come to Catholic Charities in need of food, housing, and community — and how she interacts with people every day.
When she encountered someone she regularly saw at meals on the street one day, they approached and greeted her. And it changed her. She now makes sure to meet the eyes of people she passes on the street and greets everyone she recognizes by their name.
“The people I meet and work with and serve every Tuesday are just human beings. I have the gift, the privilege, and honor to be able to say, ‘Hi, how are you?’”
Through serving in this way, Abby has learned how we all want to be seen, known, and recognized. “It’s dignity, it’s respect, it’s common decency when you call someone by name and ask about them.”
